IT BEGINS: Three Republicans, including Liz Cheney, support 2nd Trump impeachment; McConnell signals support

Well here we go. It took a few days but Republicans are now coming out in support of the second impeachment of el Presidente Trump for encouraging the attack on Congress.

First was this guy from New York:

Then Liz Cheney put out a very forceful statement on why she supports impeachment:

On January 6, 2021 a violent mob attacked the United States Capitol to obstruct the process of our democracy and stop the counting of presidential electoral votes. This insurrection caused injury, death and destruction in the most sacred space in our Republic

Much more will become clear in coming days and weeks, but what we know now is enough. The President of the United States summoned this mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack. Everything that followed was his doing. None of this would have happened without the President. The President could have immediately and forcefully intervened to stop the violence. He did not. There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution.

“I will vote to impeach the President.”

Hard to argue with any of that.

Then Rep. Kinzinger of Illinois added his voice:

And it looks like McConnell may support the effort in the Senate as well:

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has indicated that he believes that impeaching President Donald Trump will make it easier to get rid of the President and Trumpism from the Republican Party, according to a source with knowledge of the matter.

Another person with direct knowledge told CNN there’s a reason McConnell has been silent on impeachment as other Republicans have pushed back: he’s furious about last week’s attack on the US Capitol by the President’s supporters, even more so that Trump has shown no contrition. His silence has been deliberate as he leaves open the option of supporting impeachment.

There’s a lot of people still pretending to be constitutional conservatives who defend Trump. I think this is foolish. For those of us who criticized Trump in 2016, he has now come to confirm every suspicion we had about him. No, he’s not as bad as the left says he is, but that has zero to do with the truth.

We need to care more about what is true, and not about what may simply upset our political opponents. We should be better than that, because America is better than that.
