History in the Making: For the First Time Ever, Muslim Prayers Will Resound Through the Vatican

The Vatican is downplaying a historic meeting between Pope Francis,  Israeli President Shimon Peres, and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas where they will pray together, and thereby have Muslim prayer for the first time ever at the Vatican.

From Al Arabiya:

Abbas, Peres, and Francis will be joined by Jewish, Christian and Islamic religious leaders, a statement released by Peres’s spokesperson said, according to the Times of Israel.

Holy See officials on Friday said the evening prayers would be a “pause in politics” and had no political aim other than to rekindle the desire for Israeli-Palestinian peace at the political and popular level, according to the Associated Press.

While many will no doubt take this as an affront to Christendom and specifically Catholicism, others will see it as a brilliant attempt by Pope Francis to bring these world leaders together outside of politics to try to solve their differences, and diffuse some of the tension in the Middle East.

I’m sure there will be many forceful opinions from other side on the event. (Feel free to rhapsodize about your personal conspiracy theory in the comments section!!)
